Guest post: Follow-up statement from concerned La Leche League GB trustees

An open letter has been shared with all LLLGB Leaders following the recent CC report and resulting press coverage. It comes from a group of individuals within the organisation who want an Emergency General Meeting within 28 days, and who call for the removal of the six suspended trustees from post.

The letter completely misrepresents both UK law and the position of the majority of trustees.

In UK law, the term “mother” includes all those who have given birth, however they identify. By maintaining a single-sex service, LLL does not exclude transmen or non-binary individuals even if they don’t use the word mother for themselves.

It is nonsense to suggest that the trustees who made the report to the CC would not welcome transmen or non-binary individuals who do not identify as women, but who are mothers under UK law (and as a matter of biological reality). The communications that have been shared with all LLLGB Leaders prove this.

The governance of LLLGB has now broken down. The Charity Commission has responded to us and we are engaging positively with them. The minority of trustees who oppose keeping single-sex meetings are in control of all social media, both internal and public-facing. They are representing their minority view as the status quo; it is not. The changes that they are trying to push through would alter the organisation at the most fundamental level. We, the majority of trustees, are hearing from many Leaders and mothers that they are not happy with any such change in direction.

LLL has always been a mother-to-mother support organisation. It is by breastfeeding mothers for breastfeeding mothers. To suggest that LLL has always supported males is simply not true. A minority of trustees of LLLGB, together with the current majority of the LLL International board, are attempting to rewrite history.
